“My Sista!”

I wrote this poem after eating a bucket of popcorn and unsuccessfully trying to remove a kernel from between my teeth with my tongue.

This reminded me of all the pervasive men that interrupted my peace as I walked through the streets of my youth, often never taking no for an answer, armed with the unrelenting call of, "my sista!"

The Tongue, in this case, is the unwanted persuer, and the popcorn kernel is me (and anyone else who has had to suffer through this) praying for peace and to just be left alone.

This was performed at an open mic hosted by The Poetry Den at The Civil Rights Heritage Center in South Bend, IN. Watch the complete video on their YouTube channel.
